Though somewhat inextricable from his status as the singer and main songwriter in The Pixies, Black Francis (also known as Frank Black) has created a reasonable reputation for his cerebral pop-rock. 'Svn Fngrs', a mini album, takes its title from the Irish legend of C chulainn, who was believed to have seven fingers and toes. The musical territory covered is typically dark and frenetic, with the dirty blues of 'I Sent Away' and the brooding storytelling of the title track. Black's trademark preoccupations with science fiction are sidelined for this more mythical context, but his fascination with the more brutal side of life remains at the forefront.
