Following his college education Bob Brunning assembled a few of his collegiate chums together and wrote and recorded an LP for the Saga label, billed as Fives Company, about the ascent of a man from birth to the grave. This was around 1967/8 and it drew Bob into the murky world of the record business. Bob's first love was the Blues and he benefited from the Blues Boom raging through Britain at the time. Consequently he was able to record a further three LPs released through Saga, to help them cash in on the boom, and one released through President label offshoot Gemini. To do so he assembled different line ups of musicians and called himself the Brunning Sunflower Blues Band. Simultaneously falling in with the British blues crowd of the period Bob found himself in the first line up of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac ( a recording of one of their early gigs has since been released by Sanctuary) playing bass guitar. Following Fleetwood Mac Bob moved onto Savoy Brown, and then other positions with visiting US blues artists. The Brunning Sunflower Blues Band benefited from this immersion in the scene as the allumni Bob collected for his recordings at times included Peter Green, Bob Hall, Steve Rye, Jo Ann Kelly , Dave Kelly, Danny Kirwan , Colin Jordan. Thus Bob's outfits became something akin to a John Mayall like set up. This compilation, the first overview of Bob's Sunflower Blues Band period, selects the best cuts from the 4 LPs, plus one more credited to Tramp, from across his peak 1968-1972 period. The full story of this exciting scene within the British Blues Boom is told with Bob's reminiscences and stories and Bob continues to run a monthly Blues Club today in South London.
